Other scholarships

Scholarship opportunities, including merit-based awards, need-based awards and financial aid, and external funding agency opportunities (including NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR and Science Council of BC) can be found at the Faculty of Graduate Studies Awards web site.

NSERC

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) awards each year, in open competition, a number of postgraduate scholarships to assist students in undertaking graduate study and research leading to advanced degrees. These scholarships are given on the basis of high scholastic achievement and evidence of capacity to do research. The scholarships are currently valued at $17,300 for twelve months for M.Sc. students and $19,100 for Ph.D. students. Applicants for NSERC awards must be either Canadian citizens or landed immigrants (permanent residents). Application must be made through the university you are currently attending or last attended.

UGF

In addition to the NSERC scholarships there are a limited number of University Graduate Fellowships (UGF's) awarded within the university. Recipients are chosen by the Faculty of Graduate Studies from lists of nominees provided by individual departments. The application form and further information are available on the web or from the Statistics Department. University Graduate Fellows need not be Canadians or landed immigrants. However, Canadians and landed immigrants already registered at UBC must apply for NSERC scholarships in order to be eligible for UGF's. Usually, the Fellowship is a two-year award worth $16,000 per year, with no duties required of the recipient. The Department usually supplements these awards with the offer of a partial Teaching or Research Assistantship.
