There will be a midterm exam and a final exam.
The midterm exam will be on
Friday, October 27, 2017 (in class, 12noon-12:50pm). No makeup midterm exam.
If you miss the midterm with good reasons (e.g., sick), the weight
of your midterm will be transferred to your final exam.

Labs & Office hours in the midterm week (Oct 23 - Oct 27):
- Labs/office hours: All labs in the midterm week (Oct 23 - Oct 27) will be converted to
TA office hours in the lab room. Friday's lab (office hour) will
be moved to Thursday, Oct 26, 9:30am-10:30am in ESB1043. Attendance
is optional. The usual TA office hours will be cancelled for this week.
More specifically, the TA office hours in the midterm week are:
Tuesday 8:30am-9:30am (ESB1042), Wednesday 9am-10am (ESB1046),
Thursday 8:30am-9:30am (ESB1046), and
9:30am-10:30am (ESB1043).
- Lang Wu will have two office hours in the midterm week:
Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 24/25) 2:30pm - 3:30pm in ESB 3126.
- Webwork in the midterm week will be extended for two weeks (i.e., opens
on Oct 23 and closes on Nov 5).
- All labs in the week following the midterm week (i.e., week of
Oct 30 to Nov 3) will be cancelled.
Information for the midterm:
- The midterm exam is 50 minutes.
- The midterm exam is closed notes/books. There will be two versions of the exam.
- One formula/"cheat" sheet (letter size,
two sided, handwriting or typing) will be allowed in the exam.
- Please bring a simple calculator and a picture ID.
- The materials covered in the midterm exam
will include all the materials discussed in lecture classes before the midterm.
Materials in the lecture notes which are not discussed in class can be ignored (these
materials can help you better understand the methods but will not be tested in the exams).
- The focus of the exam will be
on understanding of the methods and concepts, not tedious computations or derivations.
No R code will be tested in the exam. No statistical tables are needed.
The final exam will be on December 8, 3:30pm - 6:00pm, in
ESB 1013.
Information for the final exam:
- The final exam is 2.5 hours. There may be different versions.
- The exam is closed notes/books.
- Two formula/cheat sheets (letter size,
two sided, handwriting or typing) will be allowed in the exam.
Do not directly copy the lecture slides.
- Please bring a simple calculator and UBC ID.
- The materials covered in the final exam
will include all the materials discussed in class
throughout the entire semester, i.e., the final exam is cumulative
(the materials in class 33 on longitudinal data
will not be covered - it's for information only).
Materials in the lecture notes but not discussed in class can be ignored.
More emphasis will be placed on materials covered after midterm exam.
- The format is similar to the midterm exam.
The focus of the exam will be
on understanding rather than computation or derivation or memorization.
No tedious calculation, but simple calculations using a simple calculator are
required. No need to write software code, but understanding of R outputs is
required. No statistical tables are needed.
Office hours: Instructor and TAs will hold office hours at usual times before the
final exam, except that Friday Dec 8's TA office hour
will be moved to Thursday, Dec 7, 10am-11am, in ESB1043.
There will be one additional office hour by the instructor
on Thursday, Dec 7, 2pm-3pm, in ESB 3125.
