The Nash Medal in Statistics for the 2024-2025 academic year is awarded to Chenyue Qian, who graduates with a BSc Major in Statistics.

The 42nd Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair (GVRSF) hosted at the University of British Columbia, featured 250 projects spanning life, environmental, and physical sciences. Over 400 students from grades 7-12 showcased their research. On April 11th, participants also had the opportunity to tour UBC’s science labs, sparking further interest in pursuing careers in science.

Statistics PhD candidates Kenny Chiu and Naitong Chen were honoured with the Statistics Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards for 2024. Kenny and Naitong have been recognized for their exceptional contributions to teaching.

Congratulations to Xiaoting Li, the winner of the 2024-25 Marshall Prize!

Congratulations, to the 2024 awardee, Farhan Samir! Farhan is in his fourth year of a Ph.D. in computational linguistics. He holds an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship and an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship for his future postdoc studies. His advisor is Professor Jian Zhu.

The CANSSI Prairies Regional Centre organized the CANSSI Prairies Workshop Series in Data Science in 2023, offering an excellent opportunity for individuals to enhance their knowledge and skills in various areas of data science through engaging, interactive workshops, while exploring new topics, learning cutting-edge techniques, and connecting with experts in the field. And our faculty member Daniel J. McDonald is one of the speakers in the series!

We were very happy to read the Government of Canada’s recent announcement of new and renewed Canada Research Chairs (CRCs), especially because one of our professors, Natalia Nolde, is on the list of new CRC recipients. Natalia has now been named as a CRC Tier I in Statistics of Extremes and Risk.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s recipients of the Anona Thorne and Takao Tanabe Graduate Entrance Scholarship are Master's students Zachary Lau (on the left in the photo)  and Junsong Tang (on the right in the photo).
