Statistics PhD candidate Kenny Chiu has been awarded the prestigious Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for 2024/2025.
Kenny has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the department’s teaching mission. Since 2021, he has served as the department’s TA Trainer, where he has consistently designed and updated training modules to address the evolving needs of both teaching assistants and students. His proactive approach to improving the program has included responding swiftly to concerns about grading performance by developing helpful resources for TAs. In addition to his training role, Kenny has led a mini-Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project, designing and testing the effectiveness of the "StatEngage" platform aimed at improving statistical consulting skills. He also taught STAT 306 in 2024, making significant updates to the course materials by converting them into Quarto notebooks, which greatly enhanced the in-class experience for students. Kenny’s contributions as a reliable, visionary leader in teaching and training make him a valuable asset to the department.
Thank you, Kenny, for your hard work and contributions to the Statistics Department and to UBC throughout your years here.
