UBC Statistics Students bring home Statistical Society of Canada awards

Best student presentation:  Yumi Kondo for her poster describing joint work with Yinshan Zhao and John Petkau "multiple end points in multiple sclerosis patients" .

Case study #2 winning team:  Yumi Kondo, MD Mahsin, Kyle Hambrook, and Yanling (Tara) Cai.

This was a very challenging competition! 

The subject was:  Analysis of player interaction data from a mobile social game:  finding interactions between game factors and player factors that predict engagement.


Statistical Society of Canada Awards Recipients - Jiahua Chen & John Petkau

Gold Medal:

Vivian Meng receives Honorable Mention Gertrude Cox Scholarship Award

Vivian Meng has received an Honorable Mention Gertrude Scholarship Award.  This prestigious award is given annually by the American Statistical Association, and is presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings.    Her citation reads:  "for academic achievement in the University of British Columbia statistics program, outstanding advancement of both development and application of statistical methods related to population size estimation using multiple data sources, advancing the statistics...

2013 Stanley W. Nash Medal Recipient- Jonathan Zhang

Jonathan Zhang is the recipient of the 2014 Stanley W. Nash Medal in Statistics. Statistics in Action: A Canadian Outlook

Statistics faculty Professors Paul Gustafson and Will Welch and Adjunct Professor Nathaniel Newlands each contribute a chapter to the newly published book Statistics in Action: A Canadian Outlook, from the Statistical Society of Canada and the CRC Press.  To celebrate the International Year of Statistics, the book summarizes important developments in statistical science. Constance van Eeden Invited Speaker Professor Miguel Hernan's lecture now available on Mathtube

The graduate students of the Statistics Department, with the support of the Constance van Eeden Fund, were honoured to host Dr Miguel Hernan for an invited talk on 28 February 2013. Acadia-SFU-UBC Team Receives CANSSI Grant 2014 - 2017

The Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) has awarded a Collaborative Research Team grant to the Acadia-SFU-UBC project "Statistical modeling of the world: Computer and physical models in earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences".  The UBC component on atmospheric sciences involves Professors Will Welch in Statistics and Douw Steyn in the Department of Earth, Ocean, and  Atmospheric Sciences.  More details may be found at...

Andy Leung receives 2013/2014 Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Statistics PhD candidate Andy Leung, has received a 2013/14 Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for his valued contributions to the teaching and learning mission of UBC.  This is a very big honour - only 5 are awarded in all of the Faculty of Science.   Thank you, Andy, on behalf of the Department -  of the graduate students you have mentored, of the undergraduates in courses where you have had an impact, of the faculty with whom you have worked.
