Date/Time: April 15, 11:00am – 12:30pm

Talk title: Are we there yet? Participation of micro and small enterprises in the African digital economy

Abstract: Digital entrepreneurship and platform work are frequently presented as offering business expansion and job opportunities for unemployed or low-income earners across Africa. Several examples exist of individuals leveraging digital technologies to establish profitable business enterprises or become successful freelancers. However, the extent of this type of outcome is not well-documented, and significant barriers continue to inhibit working-age populations from fully leveraging digital technologies for livelihood gains. This presentation examines the state of microentrepreneurs’ participation in the digital economy in African countries. It reflects on historical trends in digital development and what it means to achieve inclusion.

Bio: Araba Sey is a researcher and educator on digital technologies and socioeconomic development. She is currently the Deputy Director of Research ICT Africa, where she manages research programs for digital and data governance, policymaking and capacity-building across Africa. Her work includes studies of digital and social inclusion. gender digital equality, artificial intelligence for development, information disorders in Africa, and inclusive data-based decision-making for community development.
