The Nash Medal in Statistics was awarded this academic year to Sherry (Yu) Zhang. Sherry graduated this May with stellar grades in the challenging program of a combined honours in Statistics and Computer Science. Her instructors commented on her enthusiasm for her courses, her engagement with her learning and her deep understanding of the material. She has even been known to teach an instructor a thing or two, by noting some very subtle errors. In the fall, Sherry will begin the MS Financial Engineering program at Columbia University. There, she looks forward to formulating and implementing theoretically sound models, using her background in statistics and computer science.
The Nash Medal in Statistics is given each year to the most outstanding graduating student in the B.Sc. program in Statistics. The medal recognizes the great service to Statistics given by Professor Stanley Nash (1915–2001) over his more than 40 years at UBC.
The Nash Medal is supported by the Statistics Fund for Excellence.
