A distinguished group of faculty members from the Statistics department, including Trevor Campbell, Tiffany Timbers, Melissa Lee, Joel Östblom, and Lindsey Heagy from the Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences department, have won this year’s Open Education Resources (OER) Excellence and Impact Award!
This wonderful faculty group is recognized for their significant work on two data science textbooks and accompanying Jupyter notebook autograded worksheets. These resources are used by over 2,300 UBC students yearly, replacing paid materials. They're also widely utilized in UBC’s DSCI 100: Introduction to Data Science course and other North American institutions. The group has also encouraged open sharing on Github. Accessibility was prioritized with inclusive design features like colour palettes and MathJax-formatted equations, ensuring usability for all.
The OER Excellence and Impact Awards are teaching and learning awards that recognize outstanding work done by faculty at both UBC campuses who materially advance the use and impact of open educational resources in credit courses at UBC. The award program consists of one individual and one team-based award of $5,000 each year per campus.
