Statistics PhD student Olivia Liu won the BC Graduate Scholarship (BCGS)

Jiaping (Olivia) Liu, a senior PhD student in our graduate program, has been awarded the prestigious BC Graduate Scholarship (BCGS) for her outstanding contributions to the field of computational statistics and computational biology. Supervised by Professor Daniel J. McDonald, Olivia’s research focuses on developing computationally efficient methods to detect patterns in infectious diseases, a vital study area for public health and disease prevention.

Olivia is known for her exceptional leadership, perseverance, and collaborative spirit. Her dedication to her academic work and the broader research community makes her a standout member of our program.

The BC Graduate Scholarships (BCGS), valued at $17,500, are awarded to graduate students pursuing research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, with a particular emphasis on supporting Indigenous students. These scholarships are a testament to the high calibre of research conducted by students like Olivia across the province.
