The Anona Thorne and Takao Tanabe Graduate Entrance Scholarship was established through the generosity of UBC Statistics alumna Anona Thorne and her husband Takao Tanabe. The scholarship is offered annually to students entering a graduate program in Statistics. Anona Thorne (BA '91 Mathematics; MSc '93 Statistics) is a double alumna of UBC and went on to an interesting career using her statistics training at the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network at Saint Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Takao Tanabe is an internationally acclaimed Canadian painter.
The recipients for 2017 are Saifuddin Sayed, and Xin (Kathy) Zhao. Saifuddin recently completed a Master’s degree in Math here at UBC. He has been awarded the prestigious NSERC Doctoral scholarship- a testament to his academic prowess. Kathy has had an interesting path to Statistics. She received a UBC Master’s degree in Clean Energy Engineering. After her interest in Statistics was sparked, she spent a year as an unclassified students taking Statistics courses, receiving unprecedentedly high grades. The Department is proud to honour these talented students.
