Thorne–Tanabe Graduate Entrance Scholarship Recipients (2024): Zachary Lau & Junsong Tang

We are pleased to announce that this year’s recipients of the Anona Thorne and Takao Tanabe Graduate Entrance Scholarship are Master's students Zachary Lau (on the left in the photo)  and Junsong Tang (on the right in the photo).

Junsong received a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UBC. As an undergraduate, he conducted research projects on kinetic theory and statistical models for hydrology. Junsong's research plans for graduate study include computational aspects of Bayesian statistics.

Zachary completed a Combined Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics at the University of Calgary. He also gained research experience in areas including geomatics, as well as sustained involvement and leadership in the university's unmanned aerial vehicle group. His plans for research focus on statistical computing.

Congratulations, Junsong and Zachary!

The Department is proud to be able to honour students with the Anona Thorne and Takao Tanabe Graduate Entrance Scholarship, which was established through the generosity of UBC Statistics alumna Anona Thorne and her husband, Takao Tanabe. The scholarship is offered annually to students entering a graduate program in Statistics. Anona Thorne is a double alumna of UBC (BA '91 Mathematics; MSc '93 Statistics) who went on to an interesting career using her statistics training at the CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network at Saint Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Takao Tanabe is an internationally acclaimed Canadian painter.
