Winner Announcement: UBC Statistics Logo Design Contest 2024

We are thrilled to announce the winner of our logo design contest! After careful consideration and review of all the fantastic entries, we have selected a design that not only embodies the essence of our department identity but also celebrates 40 years of excellence in statistical research, education, and engagement.

  • Winner: Javier Martinez-Rodriguez (MSc student, Statistics)
  • Winning Design:

  • Art Statement: This logo has been designed to represent the main research areas of the Department of Statistics. The state diagram of a Markov chain located on the top left symbolizes Bayesian Statistics; the functions on the top, Robust Statistics; the lines in the background, Statistical Learning, Multivariate analysis, and Time Series; the area plot at the bottom, Environmental and Spatial Statistics; the dots in the background, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (it is a Manhattan chart with polar coordinates). Finally, the bar plot on the number “0” represents other research areas in the department. Together, these elements depict the view from UBC to the Coast Mountains, where the area plot at the bottom represents the mountains and the other elements represent the sky. It’s worth noting all the plots were created using R and the codes are available here: https://github.com/JavierMtzRdz/plots_40th-ann_dep-est.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Javier Martinez-Rodriguez for their outstanding creativity and contribution. Your design stood out among many impressive submissions, and we are excited to adopt it as the face of our 40th anniversary celebrations, shown off at our internal gatherings and events. Plus, we'll share stickers with the winning design with our undergraduates in September.

We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all participants for your time, effort, and innovative designs. Your talent and enthusiasm have made this contest a success.

Once again, congratulations to our winner, Javier, and thank you to everyone who participated!
